Highly Commended in Two Categories at 2021 Structural Timber Awards

Furness Partnership has been Highly Commended at the 2021 Structural Timber Awards in both the Private Housing Project of the Year and the Custom & Self-Build Project of the Year categories.

Water Gardens Pod – Private Housing Project of the Year: Highly Commended

Water Gardens Pod is a 3 bedroom luxury dwelling for the rental market that nestles beneath a 17 storey tower block in Paddington, built on a concrete plinth which forms the roof of an existing office building below.  The mono-pitched pod sits on an elevated platform and is linked to the main building by a glass entranceway.  It accommodates three inward-facing bedrooms and three bathrooms and features exposed CLT throughout.  Furness Partnership was delighted to work on this complex project with G-Frame and Fletcher Crane Architects.

The judges noted that “the scheme clearly demonstrates the way in which CLT can meet very complex design and site requirements, whilst blending into an architecturally important and historically sensitive setting”.

Origami House – Custom & Self-Build Project of the Year: Highly Commended

Origami House replaces a derelict brick built home office that had little architectural merit except for its unusual polygon shaped footprint.  This presented geometric opportunities to re sculpt the space and in considering the most elegant way to create the roof, while overcoming height constraints of the conservation area, a folded plate roof scheme solution flowed naturally from the existing polygon shape.  Furness Partnership worked with G-Frame and KSKA Architects on this project.

The judges noted that the clever “enabled the creation of a spacious, open plan interior uninterrupted by beams which would have been necessary with more traditional methods of construction”.
