The Old Sessions House
Architect: Feilden + Mawson LLP
Client: Satila
The Old Sessions House is one of the finest and most important historic buildings in Clerkenwell. Constructed in the last 18th century as the Middlesex Sessions House for the Magistrates’ courts, it was a high-status building dominating Clerkenwell Green and the surrounding area.
Over the years, it has housed numerous offices, most recently the London Masonic Centre, and has gradually fallen into disrepair. Luckily, in 2015, Satila Studios bought the building with the vision of restoring its former glory by reinstating and preserving some of the original key design features. The Old Sessions House is going to be converted into a modern venue that hosts a private members’ club. The idea is to make it a “social gathering point” for the area, with the ground floor used for that purpose.
Key features include a rooftop plunge pool, a green space, and an additional entertainment area created in the basement, where the original prison cells were located.
